Big Painting in Progress

So yeah, I've been feeling down lately...just thinking about where my art is taking me. So instead of going off into a hole, I decided to do some faster drawings. I 5 sketchs in 3 hours. Pretty good considering I take 2-3 hours on each one.

Not sure whats going on with the geisai thing....If I do get picked, I'm ready to go all in. If not, I'm still ready to all in! Here are some works in progress.

0100-0200 Fawn Fruits Series

I've been really thinking about not selling these, just cause I think it'll be cool to hold on to the works and sell them all at once.

So, I'm making an announcement that the edition 0100-0200 will not be for sale.

Geisai Miami is right around the corner and I put in a proposal that will allow me to display these 100 drawings in Miami. It's a long shot but worth it. I have about 48 days to finish it. I think I can do it... each one takes me about 2-3 hours a day.

Trying out new things

So I've been working on my fashion work. Seems like its the hot thing at the moment. Got a call from Keva Dine, who is pitching a job for me to Abercrombie and Fitch. I'm not sure why they think my work would fit with them but I figure, why not. I told keva's people that I'm interested in a full time position. Here is what they said:

1. relocation to ohio (All expense paid, housing, medical, car)
2. work as illustrator with possibility to move up to art direction
3. 1-2 year commitment with the art department.

Sounds pretty good except for the Ohio thing. I'm not sure, even if the money is right, if I can make that move to Ohio. I asked for 70K. Should've asked for more.

So I think I already made my decision, I just wanted to hear from AnF themselves, if my work is fitting. Its worth a try no?

House of Cat recently had the pleasure of interviewing Daniel Hyun Lim aka Fawn Fruits, a really talented, prolific artist know to many in the social media/creative universe. Daniel offered such thoughtful, open-hearted answers to the questions - it is my honor to share them with you.

Is Fawn Fruits another identity for you or a project or both or neither?
Fawn Fruits is the name that I give to the world of characters that I have created. Fawn, being my favorite animal, and fruits, taken from the fashion movement of the street kids in Japan. I liked the juxtaposition of both "peaceful" art and "Art on crack".

Will you explain your 1000 drawings project?
Sure, I first started my 1000 drawings as a rebellion to the gallery system. Being rejected from gallery directors left and right, I decided that it's really not about what sells, but what you love to draw. I love drawing portraits and this was my way of putting my work out to the masses. I have yet to show these 1000 drawings in a gallery setting, not sure if I even want to show them publicly. Luckily for me myspace and facebook have been my venue and I was my own curator. Lowering the cost of each drawing to $100 has enabled me to cultivate my work to the casual collectors.

I've read that your illustrations are a way of coping and expressing some darker aspects of your nature - yet they tend to bring joy and hope and humor. Can you talk more about this?
The most traumatic experience of my life happened at the start of my artistic career. My mother committed suicide when I was just barely out of High School. I had just been accepted to Art Center College of Design, ready to embark on this journey. Well, that being said, I had to take some detours in my educational course. After two years of searching for myself in Jr. College, I decided it was time to let go of the pain and pursue my life.

I channeled my fears, anger and resentment onto my own illustrations. That's when my work really flourished. With great mentors such as Rob Clayton, Alex Gross, Aaron Smith and Richard Keyes, I was able to make art that made a statement. It wasn't just a good looking illustration, it was a direct translation of my deepest feelings.

I'm a much happier person now. I've found my peace and I want to share it with people. I've been told by many people that there is a sense of calmness in my drawings. When the viewer can feel the exact feeling the artist makes, those are the best compliments any artist can receive.

Have you been drawing and creating characters your whole life?
I remember drawing dinosaurs since the age of 5. I really love drawing in a series. Here is a short list of some of the things I drew in an obsessive series: dinosaurs, zombies, vampires, girls, roaches, vespas, trees, robots, thai lettering, cities, billboards, meatball eyeballs, leaves, etc.

Your characters fit right in with contemporary culture, yet they seem to be on the outside of things...more relate-able than much of what we see. Who are these people to you?
Its funny that you noticed that but it's true. I intentionally detached myself from the going ons of this world. As an illustration instructor at Otis College of Design, I have to know what's what in illustration. I subscribe to giant robot, CMYK, Communication Arts, Juxtapoz and so on. I'm sort of, as my friend and mentor Nathan Ota puts it, a walking art encyclopedia. You can say I have a parent mentality when it comes to my drawings. I don't want them to be exposed to this world. Although they live in this world, their ideas and beliefs are not.

What are you currently working on // what are your future plans?
I'm taking things really slow. Although I tell my students to hustle and bustle, I'm doing the exact opposite. I like not being super famous. I'm ok with not seeing my drawings in converse ads. It'll be nice but I'm not really pursuing that. Right now, I'm just enjoying life. Not 15 minutes ago, I just buried my dog. Life is short to worry about trivial things. I'm spending time with my nephew, who I love dearly. I'm spending extra time with my students at Otis because I care for them. I'm spending the extra hour to talk to my girlfriend in NY, making sure she knows that I love her. That's what I'm working on right now.

My future plans? Well, marriage sounds pretty good.

We decided to create a movie poster for the Vampire Huntress Legend (VHL) by L.A Banks. It was my pleasure working with the lovely Sherin Nicole. She really knows her Black Vampire Princess!

The revisions were mostly on the likeness of the characters as we had our own take on what they should look like. The first Carlos came out looking like Joey Fatone. We decided it was best to go with Jay Hernandez. Damali's inspiration is the ever talented Res.

This is a mash up from an old drawing I did for "Elf" I think I'm going to try to bring back some old imagery...



I was really hesitant to post this drawing up but I should anyways. I've been telling my students not to worry about each drawing and just drawing...to not get pigeon holed into being "that artist that does".....Well, I dont want to be known as an artist that does only pretty art. The reason why I started this project was to be free from art direction...well, I guess in the process, i was art directing myself into a certain look. In the end, I think this drawing is a turning point, a transitional piece.... I'm no audrey kawasaki and seeing her work today made me realize how messy my work is. Well, this drawing proves my point even more. Audrey's canvas paintings are a nice turn from the wooden surface ... you should check it out, her work is solid.

anyways, before I loose my audience,

Here is 0055 Feels Strange. This week was a real struggle for me, I had to fight through this piece. Tell me I'm lazy, tell me I'm loosing it....but don't tell me this is bad art. This is one of my favorite drawings from the series....just cause there was a lot more conversation between the artist and the medium.

About this piece,

I was really scared to get back into painting with acrylics and painting big. Well, after talking to my class in Otis, i felt like I needed to get back. First off, working on better ground, this board took up a lot of beating and will need a lot of work. Second, Illustration board is pure crap. Its already started to warp so Ill need to get it to a frame shop and glue it to wood.

Getting it shot (Scanned) was another issue. Artworks charged me 30$ for the digital file. I'm not sure if that's worth it. Good shot but a bit expensive. If I plan on doing any more of these, Ill have to befriend a photographer.

About this piece. Its really just a culmination of everything I learned through this 1000 drawing project. This drawing came by pretty quick, about 7 hours. I'm teaching a class where we do a series of drawings and I think this set as a good example to the students.

Price-wise, I'm not too sure. anything above $100 seems like a lot, so I'll have to talk to my dealer about setting a price. For now, I just wanted to share this drawing with you guys

This is a side project for me while I work on freelance gigs and teaching. It's also a way

Artist Fawn Fruits (aka Daniel Hyun Lim - Reader Art 23 Jan 06) has a new name, a new attitude and a new body of artwork. Available for the first time are many of the original pencil & charcoal drawings used as the basis for his most popular digitally colored prints. These original drawings show that he is someone who is talented on and OFF the computer. Fawn Fruits is part a new group of young artists who have grown up around both traditional and new media tools, making them that much more adaptable and resourceful when making their artwork.

With Fawn Fruits, there is an important idea or purpose behind everything being made. We will let him explain it to you, "My artwork is greatly (if not mostly) influenced by media. I grew up watching a LOT of television. Therefore, my work revolves around pop culture, fun, and excitement. However, when people see my work, they do not see "bubble gum hyper Japanese visuals". Although my work is filled with these sorts of images, I have never been able to let go of my darker, more depressed nature. It may be because of losing my mother to deep depression, or even suffering a mere simple crushed heart. Whatever lured me to my "dark side", there has always been a taste of that side of me within my work. Everyone has different ways of coping with tragedy. I've learned to cope through drawing—my form of self expression. My color palette has changed from dark, muted tones to those of pastel hues. My medium has also changed from heavy acrylics to lighter colors and styles.

"Working with children has also played an integral part in my life as an artist. I've learned to not take life so seriously and just have fun making my images, now. Like a preschooler wouldn't question his/her ability to draw the human figure, I've learned to just let go and draw for fun! When people look at my work, I would like them to see......hope. We all go through struggles in life, some bigger than others. We are all bombarded with images of despair and destruction. Me?
